Graduate Spotlight: Marissa Arredondo

Marisa-041922-ts.jpgMeet Marissa, a San Antonio native and first-generation college student. Her personal experience with health challenges and healthcare-related business sparked an interest in exploring a career in health information management.

Marissa learned that she suffered from a pituitary tumor a few weeks before earning admission into the Health Information Technology program. Marissa underwent surgery following the diagnosis, leaving her with only two weeks to recover before the start of the Fall semester.

Although recovery from surgery of that kind takes approximately six weeks, Marissa persisted and was determined to start the program in the Fall.

Throughout her recovery, Marissa suffered from migraines and blurry vision - symptoms of pituitary adenoma that often continue after surgery. Despite the challenge, Marissa continued to excel academically. Her persistence led to an induction into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

This Spring, Marissa will be receiving an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology. During her time at St. Philip’s College, she has served as a work-study for Safe Space where she helped with disability services, Title IX, advocacy, and the reception desk.

As a work-study, she has enjoyed connecting with students and cherishes the relationships made with the advocacy team. “Every individual in that suite motivated me and was my biggest support system. They treated me like family and offered me many opportunities that enhanced my experience as a student,” she said.

Marissa is currently completing clinical requirements with The Center for Health Care Services (CHCS). She looks forward to a long career with CHCS as she has accepted a job offer as a Health Information Management Specialist. In her free time, Marissa enjoys attending Freedom Church of San Antonio where she serves on the decorating and cleaning committees.
